Biography
Based in Sydney, Australia, Vi Lam is a dancer, choreographer and dance educator. He graduated from Urban Dance Centre full-time program in 2009, and since then danced internationally in Vietnam and China.
Over 15 years, Vi has honed a unique dance language, sculpting movements that interpret lyrics and resonate with the intricate nuances of sound, delving into shapes and textures. In other words, his love of dance comes from his passion about human expression through dynamic and athletic movement.
To Vi, dance is not just performance but a rich narrative. His choreographies unfold stories, emphasising both abstract and commercial facets, and highlighting cultural motifs. Music is more than an accompaniment to Vi—it guides, acting as the compass for his heartfelt choreographic conversations. His collaborations span Opera Australia, Sydney Dance Company, The Australian Ballet and LOcREaDO Dance Company.
In recent years, Vi has served as Co-director alongside Loredo Malcolm within LOcREaDO Dance Company, a self-funded independent platform established since 2009. During his tenure, he showcased two original full-length works, namely "Grounded" and " Arkiteknicians". This platform serves as a vital hub, not only for his creative endeavours but also for fostering opportunities for emerging artists, ranging from indie productions to commercial ventures such as the HINO and Bresic Whitney Gala events. Additionally, LOcREaDO Dance Company offers comprehensive training and mentorship programs, catering to aspiring performers of all ages.
As teacher in lyrical and contemporary open classes at Sydney Dance Company, he believes in motivating his students by hard work, persistence, curiosity and playfulness.
Vi also co-founded The Combination, which has a vision of ‘creating a dance community and establishing a creative presence in the corporate world of entertainment… with an aim to develop more opportunities for contemporary dancers in Australia… by inspiring young dancers, progressing to work within regional communities and dance studios’ (https://www.th3combination.com/).
On screen, Vi has contributed to SBS’ “I’m Not Gay” and ABC’s “Significant Others”, and has appeared in corporate videos for in “UNSW Global”, “CHUFA Fitness” and “Business Propel”.
He has choreographed for Sydney Chinese New Year Festival, Lantern Festival and Bank of China as well as Assistant Choreographer for Packemin Productions’ musical “Wicked”.
A notable achievement was Vi’s choreography for the 2023's "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" presented by September Remedy Production at Hayes Theatre Co (for which he won an award as Best Choreography in a Musical by 2023 Sydney Theatre Awards). He is delighted and thrilled to debut his musical theatre journey with the acclaimed Asia Pacific touring production of “Miss Saigon” throughout 2024.
In addition to qualifications in Pilates and Yoga, Vi is a registered fitness trainer with Fitness Australia.
